Disclaimer: I may not be the best Godzilla fan. I never saw the original Japanese film, and by rights, that should disqualify me from writing this review. However, after watching the 1998 American film in fourk quality for the first time with an English dubbing track, it's hard to imagine why anyone would need to see a remake of anything if they already have this one laying around. This is by far one of my favorite Godzilla films. It's the only one that I own on DVD. I've seen it countless times before, but I watched it again recently with a critical eye toward the quality of the film itself. Each time I've seen it in my life, I've always given it a bold five star rating. It stood up to this scrutiny quite well. Artwork: I've always loved the artwork of this film. The backgrounds are beautiful, colorful, and well-detailed. The miniatures are just amazing for what they are. They look real enough that you can believe they don't have any people running around them. There's some amazing effects work at play during the final battle sequence. More on that later... Story:The story is so simple it's almost insulting to call it a story at all. A giant monster may wander around the Earth destroying cities, but mostly everyone who sees it thinks of it as a metaphor for nuclear war or revenge. Godzillas footsteps are followed by burning oil. His breath is fire. He has the ability to shoot lasers out of his dorsal fins, which I always thought was kind of silly for a film that made such a big deal about "being realistic." Up until Godzilla Filius shows up, the film is almost entirely devoid of human characters. This movie could have easily been categorized as an experimental silent film if it wasn't for Raymond Burr's character, Steve Martin, who does nothing but talk while the action takes place behind him. Whenever a character in a film is this utterly superfluous, it usually isn't a good sign. However, this film does in fact have a real plot. It's just hidden underneath the amazing special effects by the people at Toho studios. The plot centers around an American journalist who is documenting Godzilla's movements across Japan in order to prove that he exists. In doing so, he accidentally captures footage of Godzilla leaving another monster egg in the ocean during his mating season. This egg hatches into his son, which goes on to attack American military vessels and bases before going on a rampage around Manhattan. cfa1e77820
